Synopsis:

In the American Wild West, the world’s greatest race is about to begin. Thousands of people are lining up in San Diego to travel over 6,000 kilometers hoping to win the grand prize of fifty million dollars. With the end of the horse-drawn age, participants can use any vehicle they want. Competitors will have to endure harsh conditions, covering up to 100 kilometers a day in uncharted wilderness. The Steel Ball Race is truly a unique event.

Young Johnny Joestar, a crippled former jockey, comes to San Diego to witness the start of the race. There, he meets Gyro Zeppeli, a racer who carries two steel balls instead of a gun in his belt. Johnny witnesses Gyro unleashing incredible power using one of his steel balls, and a man shooting himself during a duel. In the midst of these events, Johnny touches the steel ball and feels a force pass through his legs, allowing him to stand for the first time in two years. Determined to discover the secret of the steel balls, Johnny decides to enter the race, and thus begins his bizarre adventure in the United States, known as the Steel Ball Race.
